CAN I GET PAID FOR WORK FROM ANOTHER JOB WHILE ON H-1B?

         Question:

Firstly, thanks so much for the services to the community. My friend’s son (an international student) is currently on OPT. He would probably be gainfully employed on an H-1B. He has been approached by Springer Journals to write a book on his current specialization. My friend is requesting advice on whether it would be okay to also write and get paid for the books while he is on an employment based on an H-1B from a different company.

Would appreciate your kind consideration of the question and your reply.

Answer:

As a student, he is allowed to write a book while on his OPT. On an ongoing basis on H-1B, if he is not being paid, then he can write and if he would be paid- it would be regarded as work and then that will not be allowed.
