Delay in Approval of Naturalization Applications

Recently our office has seen delay in approval of Naturalization (N-400) applications. The statistics for the year 2016, the time since presidential primary elections and through the first year of Trump Administration, 1,028,647 lawful permanent residents have applied to become U.S citizens. But there is a backlog of 708,638 pending applications. Such backlogs are contributing to the formation of an added barrier, which some scholars call as institutionalization of “Second Wall”. The consequences of such delays are quite apparent. There will be delay in people using their voting rights and sponsoring their family members lawfully to U.S. It is difficult to assess what is the reason of Government’s “slow walking” with these lingering citizenship applications. But we request USCIS to adjudicate Naturalization applications to its normal processing time and have sufficient fund allocation to address the backlog challenges. We are hopeful to see a positive change.
