Traveling to the U.S.? Know Which Documents You Need to Carry

With the Alien Registration Requirement now enforced, carrying the correct documentation when entering or staying in the U.S. is essential. Ahluwalia Law Offices breaks down what’s needed based on your category.

1. B Visitors (Tourist or Business Visa Holders)

Required Documents:

  • Valid Passport
  • Valid B-1/B-2 Visa
  • I-94 Record (may be paper or electronic)
  • For Canadian B visitors, I-94 may not be required, but ties to Canada must be shown to avoid registration obligations.

Key Rule: Canadian citizens not issued an I-94 and staying longer than 30 days may be subject to ARR registration.

2. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) Travelers

Required Documents:

  • Valid Passport
  • ESTA Authorization
  • I-94W (valid for 90 days)
  • Satisfactory Departure extension (max 30 extra days, if granted)

3. Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders)

Valid Entry Documents:

  • Valid I-551 (Green Card)
  • Expired I-551 with Form I-90 receipt (36-month extension)
  • Foreign passport with I-551 stamp
  • I-327 (Reentry Permit), if applicable

Note: Green Card holders should carry their documentation at all times to comply with ARR laws.

4. U.S. Citizens

Acceptable Travel Documents:

  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • Passport Card (land/sea travel)
  • Original or copy of birth certificate (for minors under 15 entering by land/sea)
  • Enhanced Driver’s License or Nexus/SENTRI/Global Entry card (TTP members)
